What are selkies?

Are selkies people who can turn into seals? Or seals who can turn into humans? Who is to say which is their true form? But either way, the legends say they are as much like us as they are different.

This is one of a handful of stories I’ve found that show how the seal hunt might have impacted seal-people.

Tom Muir tells the Scottish tale ‘A Selkie Story.’¬† The story focuses on a selkie (seal) hunter’s encounter with his prey and how the event changed his life forever. The video, which is around 14 minutes long, was filmed for the Scotland’s Stories website.

This story is set near John O’Groats in Caithness, on the northeast coast of Scotland, and south across the Pentland Firth from the Orkney Islands.

Tom Muir has a delightful collection of stories called The Mermaid Bride and other Orkney Folk Tales. It has lots of stories about mermaids, selkies, and other interesting Orcadian creatures.
