Welcome to the Selkie World

You are now in the Selkie World, where you will explore the folklore of selkies, theories of their origin, selkies in popular culture, and the natural history of the seals that inspired the legends.

I’m Morgan, living in Anchorage, Alaska, for seventeen years and writing a novel about contemporary selkies in Alaska.

I first met selkies when I was in my early twenties listening to the Joan Baez Ballad Book recording of “Silkie,” a version of an old folk song variously called “The Great Silkie of Sule Skerry” or the “The Grey Selkie.” It was fascination at first meeting.

“The Secret of Roan Inish,” that wonderful film, captivated me fifteen years ago. What if there were selkies in Alaska, I wanted to go looking for them! So I started an exploration of all things selkie, from traditional legends and folk songs to fiction, music and movies in popular culture.

Come along, or swim if you like, and explore with me. I hope you enjoy the journey!
